Good digestion isn’t just about what you eat—it’s also about how you eat. The way we approach meals can either support our gut or leave us feeling bloated, sluggish, and uncomfortable. Mindful eating helps calm the body, boost nutrient absorption, and create habits that your digestion (and mood) will thank you for. Stress, speed, and timing can all disrupt the body’s natural rhythm, leading to discomfort and reduced nutrient absorption. These seven simple, practical tips will guide you toward a happier tummy and a more balanced relationship with your food.
Take 10 deep breaths and look at your food, not your phone before eating your meal. You may have rushed cooked, in a loud environment, be pulled over on the side of the road after being in lots of traffic. Calm the mind and body before you take your mouthful.
If you are prone to bloating, avoid drinking with your meals and opt for pre and post instead, This dilutes stomach acid which impacts on digestion. We want decent stomach acid as it helps us absorb nutrients and break down food. Unless you are in Italy, who doesn’t want a glass of red wine with their pasta?!
Take supplements away from coffee as caffeine disrupts many of the nutrients from being absorbed.
Take a short walk after your dinner meal, especially if you have eaten closer to bedtime than you had originally envisioned for your day, absolute game changer for digestion pre bed and blood sugar stability.
Don’t randomly pick probiotic strains. Pick them specific to your needs and listen to your bodies signals and tell tale signs when things chance eg. What stage of your cycle are you in? Have you been running around all day shallow breathing?
Time restricted eating window overnight, to give the gut a break from processing food and lets it do the background clean sweep it doesn’t get the chance to do if we are constantly snacking. I personally aim to do 12hours minimum and when I don’t do this I notice more bloating creep back in.
Avoid alcohol during the week, keeps dopamine high and allows us to stay focused on work and stay motivated for exercise and morning routines.
